A new controller, made for adult-sized hands this time around, includes a small touchpad area, allowing for additional game control and options.
Online play will now require a Playstation Plus subscription. However, the service offers free games monthly, which you keep as long as your PS+ account is active. You will also be able to use services that you already pay for, such as Netflix, without paying for an additional subscription. This is very different from Microsoft’s stance, where they lock everything behind a paywall.
Sony have opted to not include a base DRM on their system, allowing their users to rent/lend/borrow games, as well as buy and sell them on the open market.
The PS4 is indie developer friendly. You don’t need a publisher or buy-in to develop games for the new Playstation. This opens the door for all types of content you only typically see on PC. Sony have asked developers for feedback to make their offering more enticing to them. They listened and are really trying to make a difference for small publishers.
Sony’s announced price is $399.
Compared to the other competitors, the Wii U has been very slow to gain consumer confidence, and Microsoft appears to have made some very bad decisions for the Xbox One.
Prediction: PS4 wins next gen, but it may be close.
